I participated in a Green Business webinar a couple of weeks ago, it gave plenty of food for thought. I already had plans for recycled and reusables sections within my store – watch this space for reusables and if you have ideas on what you would like to see please feel free to add suggestions in the comments. Posting orders, it can turn into a plastic overload. I’m sure you yourselves have ordered online and had your order arrive in a plastic bag full of plastic bubble wrap or the dreaded box of polystyrene peanuts and I’m keen to avoid that as much as possible.
The dreaded packaging – it is unavoidable but that doesn’t mean it can’t be recyclable or reusable
I considered reusing packaging, but that doesn’t look anything special. I want my customers to be excited to receive their orders and have the joy of unwrapping something a bit more special than an old amazon box.
I hit on an alternative of creating packaging that can be first in the reusable chain.
My orders will be wrapped in tissue paper, if large or fragile there will be some recycled packing paper used as this is often tape free and will not be tatty like an outer box can be.
I will try and stick to paper tapes and hopefully the box and the wrapping can be reused to send parcels or in your artwork.
A way of reducing your carbon footprint is to plant trees.
Obviously planting random trees in parks is not a good idea. But I have found several companies that plant trees on your behalf when you make a donation.
To donate to these companies to begin with would not be financially possible, but as sales increase and my business become financially stable, I hope to be able to contribute to a plant a tree scheme and lower my carbon footprint.
My YouTube channel as some may have already found, is about reusing and recycling to create art projects. But it’s also been a bit slow so far as editing videos takes time, and that time is a balancing act do I create videos or stock to sell? Stock to sell is winning that debate at least for now it is. Hopefully, once my business is up and running I will be able to create more tutorials. I will be selling my makes through my store.
One thing I’m very keen to promote through my business and my YouTube videos is the fact that disability doesn’t need to be a barrier to creating beautiful artwork and that the process of creating is as enjoyable as the finished work and it also doesn’t have to cost much to create things from my tutorials, in this current climate we need to cut back on spending, and I hope my videos will help you continue to create artwork even on a small budget.
